Histoire de la violence

Édouard Louis ✓ 3 review characters ´ eBook or Kindle ePUB ✓ Édouard Louis read Histoire de la violence A gripping autobiographical novel the best work yet from the most talked about French writer of his generationOn Christmas Eve 2012 in Paris the novelist Édouard Louis was raped and almost murdered by a man he had just met This act of violence left Louis shattered; its aftermath made him a stranger to himself and sent him back to the village the family and the past he had swo. I admired The End of Eddy but this book left me unmoved cold It s the same story retold a traumatic rape instead of a traumatic childhood there s the same analytical vaguely masochistic intelligence the same dead voice echoed here by the narrator s sister who recounts the story like a character in a play delivering a monologue so staged and tedious it strains credulity The narrator hides behind a door eavesdropping commenting on the commentary providing the book with its spare moments of inadvertent humorAs novels have morphed into memoirs there s a sense of the suffering sweepstakes that no unfortunate experience is too excruciating for confabulation Call it reality literature I m still impressed by his talent but Louis needs a new subject Eddy s become a bore

I find History of Violence to be an important book Important as it talks about important topics and because in my opinion it gives a clear illustration of how the world looks like at this moment in regard to so many themes rape as such victim complex immigrants homosexuality poverty As expected it was neither pleasant nor easy to read but it was a great read nonetheless I found many parts simply amazing so honest and true so right Especially when Louis writes about his emotions and being a victim of rape and assault I would love to have people who are shouting about victim culture and how victims are favoured these days read it Also I would love all people to listen to Louis talking because he is such a bright talented and brilliant man I had the pleasure to attend a meeting with him and believe me it was worth every minute spent there I regret there aren t enough of his reflections in the book the links he creates between events also regarding literature I may understand the idea of using the outsider narration in the form of his sister retelling the story to her husband in History of Violence but it was the weakest part of the book in my opinion On the meeting there was time devoted to the notion of identity and I believe it would match the book ideally There were also vital things mentioned like hatred towards his rapist but with no link to active seeking the punishment for him This is something that disappears somewhere in novelmemoir and it s a pity as I find it another topic worth discussingI will definitely read everything else that Louis wrote and I hope I will be able to listen to him I believe he is a person to do great things in literature Also nobody made me want to read Toni Morrison immediately just now
